Designing The Perfect Online Poker Room
[Bill's Blog] I'm thinking that there are a number of areas in which the sites could standardize, perhaps starting with hand histories. If each site wrote hand histories in a common standard format (let's face it, it's not that complicated) and stored them similarly, then life would become a lot easier for all concerned: the sites could stop spending money on their (mostly crappy) stats and history components and the players would be able to choose the level of tool (and cost) they wanted - there'd be a lot more to choose from if developers didn't have to fool around figuring ou how to parse various crummy formats (and weird database structures, like pokerroom's).

Initial Vegas Prep
[Chris Halversons Poker Blog] In preparation for Vegas, I’m taking this whole week off. I’m up against the max vacation I can acrue, in fact the company “owes” me 5 days already this year for time that I’ve marked as vacation when in reality I never took it. I still will have to “take” a vacation day per month just to keep it up.

Friday Night Poker
[Drowned at the River] It was supposed to be a trio, initially, but one of the participants was stricken with a case of Friday Night Paralysis. It’s a crippling disease that can strike the moment you sit down in a comfortable chair after a long week of work, and kick off your shoes. My theory is that when the shoes come off, all of the blood rushes into your feet, leaving you light-headed and causes you to pass out.

QOTD
[Drowned at the River] “There are few things that are so unpardonably neglected in our country as poker. The upper class knows very little about it. Now and then you find ambassadors who have sort of a general knowledge of the game, but the ignorance of the people is fearful.

insurance
[prod ponder] Plans are in the works for a summer vaccation, and so the question of trip insurance came up. Now since I’ve taught graduate research methods courses and play poker with a vengance, to my mind this is actually a fascinating, rant-worthy issue. I also figure that I should do a bit more to live up to the blog’s name of “prod and ponder”. So here’s my provocative statement:

Poker ruled a “game of chance” by N.C. judge!
[Tales From The Felt] Apparently, this judge has it in his mind that since you can’t alter the identity of the card next off the deck by using statistics or skill, poker is entirely a game of chance. I guess that makes Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, David Sklansky and the like the luckiest people on the planet!

tough 15/30 session
[the virtual nuts] I finally tightened up, and that was what worked. On some tables you can raise from late position pretty liberally, but my tables tonight were pretty loose, so raising wasn’t getting any respect. If you wanted to win a hand, you had to show it down. Early on I missed several draws which always hurts the session.

My strategy for the Freeroll”¦
[Drowned at the River] The math says that if you have two overcards and someone else is holding a lower pair, you’re only behind 48% - 52%, but that only holds if you’re willing to take it all the way to the river. By folding overcards post-flop, I’d been cheating myself out of a lot of opportunities. Since this was a freeroll, I decided to commit to my good starting hands, and see where they’d take me.

20/20 here I come
[Brian] I made appointments to have Lasik consultations at a couple of different places. I'm going next Wednesday to TLC, where Tiger Woods had his eyes done way back in 1999 (not that having famous people as your clients should be a dealmaker). I'm not 100% sure if they do the Intralase, but they do custom eye mapping, which is interesting. Vision Quest is right up the street from us, and a couple of co-workers had their surgery done their a couple of years ago.

Paulys Free-roll Tourney
[Drowned at the River] Shortly thereafter, I went on a bit of a tear. I have been in the chip lead for about 45 minutes of the second period of play, having $40k+ to second place’s $20k at some points. I’m still in the lead, but the gap has narrowed substantially. I’m now at $46k, with 2nd place at $35k.

[Matt's Place] I recently celebrated my 29th birthday, which almost puts the wraps on decade three of this great (well mostly) adventure. I am truly blessed to have such a great family and friends. 3rd Place?!
[Matt's Place] I love it when you stumble on goodies on the Internet. I'm not a big gambler, but I have recently picked up a very nasty poker bug. Since I've started playing, I've had a hard time finding places to play that are competitive with play money. Most online poker rooms only offer ring games for free (play money) and the level of play is quite poor on those tables.

Buh Bye NHL, hello Texas Holdem
[TERMINAL8.COM] I recall hearing on a local radio station mid last year that the latest craze in weekend past times was poker - the game of texas hold’em. Reasons for the recent explosion in texas hold’em’s popularity was attributed to it being broadcast on major networks, the involvement of celebrities in the game, and yes - the NHL season lock out. With 1 less reason to go out to a bar to drink and watch a sporting event what are Toronto’s hockey fans to do? Although poker isn’t officially a sport, it sure is being broadcast and marketed with a similar intensity that we see in sporting events. Fans of the game know the big winners and their particular playing styles like they would know any other successful athlete.

another party bonus
[the virtual nuts] Finished off the BONUSMAY Party bonus today. I won about $100 at the $1/$2 tables while clearing it. So, after a bad start to the weekend, I recovered a good portion of my losses. In fact, combining this bonus, 888 day, and my shots at $15/$30 I think I came very close to fully recovering the 32red loss.

Love Them Bad Beats
[The .NET Guy] One of the benefits of playing in a legit card room is the bad beat jackpot. This place has a ridiculously tough bad beat for Omaha -- quad 10s or better beaten -- so we hit a jackpot that hadn't been hit in about 9 months. (By comparison, the Holdem bad beat -- Aces full of tens or better, beaten by quads or better, is usually hit a couple times a month.)

32red casino
[the virtual nuts] It was a £1000 deposit, for a £320 bonus. The trick is, you have a average a bet of 5% of your deposit. So this meant that I had to wager 33K at £50 a pop. The bonus is +EV, but the variance is high due to the min average bet.

[Poker is your hobby. Poker is our sport. Betfest.com.] For those who do not possess such knowledge, that will not stopthem from playing the game from a competition standpoint. Expectmore satellite tournaments at land based casinos to sponsorseats to the WSOP in order to cash in on the poker craze. Theyadmit they don't make much from the tables, but what they makeon other sales and games from the players and the crowds theyattract, make poker something they will promote. Land basedcasinos went from closing down poker rooms to opening themup again and building new ones to handle the capacity.

Why Tym is upset about the casinos
[Tomorrow] Perhaps the purpose of consultation in this case was not a popularity poll (and even if it were, I'd hesitate to suggest that those who said "nay" were greater in number), but rather to canvass actual worthwhile reasons for and against the casino. However, there is not all that much to be said: and it is certain that our very well paid cabinet would have thought of more or even all of them even before the results of any public consultation.

History of Blackjack Advantage Systems, Part I
[Games for Money - Tricks and Tips for those Games of Chance and Rare Skill - Poker, Blackjack, etc.] Myself and two or three friends would meet at a rendezvous point in the San Fernando Valley, get on the Hollywood Freeway, connect to the San Bernardino Freeway, stop in Barstow for coffee, making the 296-mile drive in about six hours. Our first stop was the Dunes where we would look for Ralph, our favorite dealer, and play single-deck blackjack dealt to the bottom well into the night (remember this was before Thorp’s book). Our $100 bankroll was converted $20 at a time into real silver dollars, which were the dollar chips of choice in those days, and we would grind away with our $1-unit bets well into the night.

Insanity at the Stratosphere
[actionBERG] Man, this could be the craziest theme-park type ride ever. About a month and a half ago, the Stratosphere introduced a new ride called Insanity, which describes the ride pretty well. Basically, it is a swing ride like most theme parks have (usually named Tornado or something), but with an extreme twist. You are hanging over the edge of the Tower! You have got to be kidding! I couldnt imagine the amount of testing that must have gone in to making sure this thing is fail-safe, at least I hope they did a lot of testing. I mean I have done the other rides on the Stratosphere, but I dont know about this one. Let me know if you have ridden this ride. Play video (high) | Play video (low)...

Getting lucky on a Virgin plane
[actionBERG] I was reading an entry over at ForgetFoo about the A380 test flight that happened yesterday, and it got me thinking about something I had heard a while back. Virgin Atlantic had talked about putting a casino on the A380. Talk about the coolest thing ever. Now, when I am taking my $9000 (down from $9010 with the $10 online discount they offer) round trip Virgin Atlantic flight over to Macau to visit the new $4.6 billion Wynn Casino they are building, I can rest assured that I will get some extra blackjack time in on the way over.

One way to make money gambling
[Jacqueline Mackie Paisley Passey] Of course, they dont allow you to just take your money and run -- you have to earn it, and thats where blackjack comes in. Online casinos have a Wage Requirement that must be met before youre allowed to cash out. This is usually between $1,000-5,000 depending on the casino. Playing blackjack is one of the few games in a casino where if you play strategically, the houses odds are only slightly over half.
