[prod ponder] Plans are in the works for a summer vaccation, and so the question of trip insurance came up. Now since I’ve taught graduate research methods courses and play poker with a vengance, to my mind this is actually a fascinating, rant-worthy issue. I also figure that I should do a bit more to live up to the blog’s name of “prod and ponder”. So here’s my provocative statement:

[LoopyLibrarian - Librarianship with a Jangle Angle] Weekend News Dump: South African aid workers are concerned that some HIV/AIDS assistance programs might have the "unexpected downside" of "perverse incentives," in which people might sacrifice their health in order to qualify for job programs, food and other benefits,... "The World" -- a production of BBC World Service, PRI and WGBH Boston -- reported on Tuesday. People who are "desperately poor" might go to extremes to qualify for job or food aid programs and might make "bad or even unsafe decisions" regarding their health, according to "The World." Government-sponsored programs that help HIV-positive people are important, especially in a country where there are few state-sponsored benefits and no welfare system for unemployed people, "The World" reports. One example is the "highly sought after prize" of government disability grants for HIV-positive individuals in South Africa, according to "The World." In some cases, HIV-positive people who receive the disability grant increase their families' income by an average of 50%, according to research by Nicoli Nattrass, an economics professor and director of the AIDS and Society Research Unit at the University of Cape Town.

[Robotwisdom.com] Robot Wisdom WebLog May98waxing: Nixon, a private citizen, was committing treason (delaying peace talks for a war in which America was involved) in pursuit of political office. Johnson had this information (as well as proof that the Greek military junta was funneling millions to the Nixon campaign via Spiro Agnew) and refused to use it. He saw it as leverage against any investigation Nixon might undertake against him that would sully his image.

[Hnn.us] Spencer Blog Archives 8-03: Longtime readers will remember that, in my early days on this blog, I had righties who were trying to throw this one in my face on the comment boards, claiming I was being hypocritical and that my opposition to the war was pure politics because I clearly had supported that war in Kosovo, right? I surprised them when I told them on the board that I was opposed to Kosovo in 1999 but certainly could see the humanitarian arguments for it, just as I could see the humanitarian arguments for invading Iraq. I also noted that the administration wasn't saying much about the humanitarian arguments at the time, preferring to play up the military threat posed by Saddam.
