[Ablogistan] The Meaning of a Flush: There are few things that are so unpardonably neglected in our country as poker. The upper class knows very little about it. Now and then you find ambassadors who have sort of a general knowledge of the game, but the ignorance of the people is fearful. Why, I have known clergymen, good men, kind-hearted, liberal, sincere, and all that, who did not know the meaning of a "flush." It is enough to make one ashamed of the species.
[Ablogistan] This one's for Mark: The upper class knows very little about it. Now and then you find ambassadors who have sort of a general knowledge of the game, but the ignorance of the people is fearful. Why, I have known clergymen, good men, kind-hearted, liberal, sincere, and all that, who did not know the meaning of a "flush." It is enough to make one ashamed of the species." -Mark Twain
[Benjaminorion.blogspot.com] Benjamin Orion: Those gods had been closely associated with civic virtues, back when Greece was a loose and quarrelsome confederation of proud city-states, before being swallowed up by the new empire. Furthermore, the old gods displayed less-than-divine character traits, such as jealousy, lust and anger, which no longer appealed to a more reflective mentality. The rational thinking fostered by Athens during its Golden Age (5th century B.C.) also took its toll on traditional religious belief, sometimes resulting in agnosticism or atheism, which could lead to public censure and even death. Finally, the very creation of a vast empire extending all the way to Afghanistan introduced many new religious ideas and rituals.

[Identitytheory.com] identity theory | weblogs | table stakes - the identitytheory.com ...: One of the sillier ways of protecting your hand in poker is to actually show it to the table while the action is still live. Players view it as a form of insurance, even though it goes against the whole idea of poker. An example would be, like, if you had pocket aces on the button, and before the flop someone made a big bet and was called by three or four people. There's a decent amount of money in the pot, and you know you have the best hand, so you move all-in preflop and show your aces knowing that no one has the odds to call you and you'll win what's in the pot without risking anything.
[Babalublog.com] Babalu Blog: I need to thank my boss, not only for his monetary contribution, but for putting up with all of my frantic running around and missing work and for allowing me the time to take care of everything that needed to be taken care of. It is an incredible honor and privilege to work with such a noble and understanding man who has been a bastion of support with my work on the blog and the convention. Not only that, but he urged and nagged his friends until they too, came up with donations of their own. Gracias, Opie.
[Darleenclick.com] Darleen's Place: Look at her two first examples of fearful tenets of the DT -- That a "culture of life" is belied when one supports the death penality for convicted murderers AND supports the protection of unborn innocents. What does it say about her values that she supports the opposite .allowing some of the most evil creatures among us keep what they so wantonly have taken from others, while concurrently allowing - without question, indeed without criticism or debate - the termination of innocent, nascent human life, even unto killing during birth?
